SATURDAY
- SEPTEMBER 2, 2000
Today I bought a new
flatbed scanner and a network card (I bought the card from Jack. He
was going to return it). We hooked our PC’s up to his hub and
... voila! I was instantly connect to the net via his DSL! However,
after installing the scanner, my PC started locking up constantly. It
went down tonight and I have been unable to boot up AT ALL!
SUNDAY
- SEPTEMBER 3, 2000
My PC has been out of
commission all day. It will not boot up. I am so depressed.
Jack, Adam & I spent
a pleasant (if exhausting) day experiencing the Japanese festival and
the St. Louis Botannical Gardens. I took some pictures.... I will hopefully
be able to put them up on the net as soon as they are developed. We
saw all kinds of performers.
After our trip to the
Japanese Festival, We walked to Pho Grand, a Vietnamese restaurant.
Unfortunately, they had a line waiting, so we walked back down the street
to Meikong, a different Viet Restaurant.
My PC would still not
boot up tonight, but I was so tired, I could hardly care.
MONDAY
- SEPTEMBER 4, 2000
No work today... my first
“vacation” day on my new job. I got up early and ... oh,
I turned on my PC and .... IT’S WORKING AGAIN. Well, sort of.
I still keeps locking up. And I am getting some kind of DHCP error on
boot up, but I am (so far) able to update my diary!
FRIDAY
- SEPTEMBER 8, 2000
Tuesday through today
have been pretty repetitive. I have been able to determine the the problem
with my computer is the scanner software. When I de-install it, the
computer doesn’t lock up. When I reinstall it... LOCK UP!
I have made some progress
with my autobiography site. I added some more things just tonight under
“Hatton” where we used to live in Washington State.
Oh, yes! I almost forgot!
I attended my first Tuesday night get together of EASL (the Esperanto
League of St. Louis).
Oh... I have to work
tomorrow. From 6am to 4pm.
SATURDAY
- SEPTEMBER 10, 2000
It’s 5:19 am....
I am getting up for work. Yes. On a Saturday. Where’s my coffee!
<yawn>
THURSDAY
- SEPTEMBER 14, 2000
I have recently taken
a venture into the world of “personal ads” (on-line, of
course). I’ve never done this before, but I need to get out and
meet people. This is one way to do it. Hopefully, it will be better
than the old “bar scene.” I’ve had a couple of responses.
We’ll see what develops!
Well, I go several “bites”
on the personal ads. I would like to do go on a date with one of these
people tomorrow if possible, but I have to get some money from Jack.
I haven’t seen him today and he’ll probably be at work tomorrow.
I’ll probably end up being broke on a Friday night.
I worked on my scanner
again tonight. I tried all the stuff I was advised to do in an email
from the manufacturer. Nothing worked. My PC locks up worse that ever
when I have the scanner drivers loaded. I am taking it back on Saturday...
I’m tired of messing with it. Most disappointing.
FRIDAY
- SEPTEMBER 14, 2000
Today was a fairly easy
day at work. I have the weekend off. I was hoping I could go out tonight...
maybe meet one of the people I have been communicating with in the personal
ads. Unfortunately, Jack has all the money and he was at work. I had
about $6 left to go out on. Kind of embarrassing. Hopefully I can get
some cash tomorrow! I have to work again next weekend... don’t
want to spend the rest of my life in front of this computer!! :)
SATURDAY
- SEPTEMBER 16, 2000
Got up at 6:59am... my
alarm is set to go off at 7:00am! I turned it off.
Then I went to Walgreen’s
and picked up the pictures I put in 2 weeks ago. They had lost them
and it took about 15 minutes before they finally found them. I thought
I was going to have to go postal :)
Stopped at MacDonald’s
for breakfast... they still have those dinky little breakfast burritos.
They’re ok.
12:28pm - I’ve
packed up the scanner. Jack and I are getting ready to go downtown to
Office Depot and return it.
1:28pm - We still haven’t
made it to Office Depot! We went over to a friend’s apartment
and had lunch.
THEN realized we forgot
the #$@#! receipt and so I am (at this moment) running back inside to
get the darn thing. Well... better get back downstairs before my ride
returns for me!
This evening Jack and
I went out for Sushi and “Sansui”... it was delectable!
Yummm! For $90 it should be, of course. We had 2 bottles of sake and
a platter for two. Ahhh....
SUNDAY
- SEPTEMBER 17, 2000
I worked with my new
scanner this morning. I have having problems again. Very similar to
what happened with the other scanner. My computer will lock up. However...
(so far) it only locks up while I am working with it. The other one
would cause my PC to lock up simply having the software installed. I
have been able to deal with this one. It’s still upsetting.
This afternoon I went
out and bought a splatter screen (for use in the kitchen while cooking).
I wanted to buy a lid, but they cost about $20! Sheesh! Anyway, I went
next door to Gateway Computers and looked over what the have there.
I will probably but a computer from them as soon as I get my finances
under control.
Stopped at Talayna’s on the way home and treated myself to a plate
of hot wings and a pitcher of beer. Its’ so boring, thought, doing
these things alone.
MONDAY
- SEPTEMBER 18, 2000
Typical day. Nothing
unusual. Boring.
TUESDAY
- SEPTEMBER 19, 2000
One of two tape failed
while doing backup preparation this afternoon. Tracy (my supervisor)
left for a few days on a trip to Toronto. Must be nice! Jack is getting
ready for a short trip to the Ozark’s (which will begin with a
job interview... Good Luck Jack!); And Adam is taking a trip to California.
I’m not getting to go anywhere... but I will have the place to
myself for a few days. That will be like a vacation for me. :)
WEDNESDAY
- SEPTEMBER 20, 2000
That tape drive died
after 67% of backup last night! This was a HECTIC day... Tracy got out
just in time! I had to go get a few cocktails to reward myself for my
diligence this evening.
I tried to scan something
this morning. The scanner (i.e., PC) locked up every time I tried so
far. No promising.
Thursday - September 21, 2000
Pretty typical day. I
did learn how to identify IDXRad sessions that are eligible for forced
exit when DSM license levels gets too high.
After work I went for
a few drinks, then went home. Oh, I realized this morning that I had
left my train pass at home! Fortunately, they didn’t ask to see
it, but on the way home (with a few Bloody Marys in me) they were asking
for passes and tickets! I was nervous... but sat at the far end of the
car. My ride is only about 3 minutes. The ticket checker didn’t
have time to reach me before the train stopped <sigh of relief>!
FRIDAY
- SEPTEMBER 22, 2000
So far... I got up this
morning! We get OT checks today! Jack and Adam have apparently gone
on the respective trips. (No one seems to be here).
As I got ready for work
this morning, I discovered I could not find my pager anywhere! I had
seen it last night... I remembered setting it to ‘silent alert.’
I am afraid it fell off somewhere. I can’t find it in the house
and I have an alarm set on it for 7:55 am. I would have heard it go
off then... so I don’t think its in the house. I wonder if I will
be required to pay for it? It belongs to Wash U!
After work I went to Target
and bought a new pair of jeans and a couple of shirts. It has been quite
a while since I purchased any clothes.
SATURDAY
- SEPTEMBER 23, 2000
I made major changes
to my web site today. Create a “Halloween” theme. I am going
to try to do something like this for each month.
I tried sending message
to my pager several times today with my phone number. No one has responded.
Went to Union Station this afternoon and walked around. Had some hot
wings at Hooters, but was practically trapped on the elevator on my
way there. I was on the first floor and rang for the elevator. It arrived,
I got on and pressed “3” to go up to the restaurant. The
elevator went up to 3, but the doors didn’t open and the elevator
just seemed to ‘settle’ back to the ground floor again.
As soon as it got to the bottom it immediately started to rise again.
It just zoomed up and repeated the same thing again. I went up &
down three times before the doors finally opened! Needless to say, I
took the stairs to get there after that!
This evening I went downstairs
to the little pizza place and got a pizza to go. I had nice glass of
Tiamo red wine while I waited. On my walk to The Sunflower (I think
that’s what it’s called) something stung my foot. It hurt
intensely for a moment... then faded away. No biggy.
I have to work tomorrow.
SUNDAY
- SEPTEMBER 24, 2000
I worked today. While
I was doing the RENTGN Backup tapes there was a phone call. I got back
to my desk and noticed the Help Desk message light on. I remembered
Tracy went over the procedure for answer the voice mail, but it requires
a phone number (which I couldn’t remember) and password (which,
again, I couldn’t remember). But I had written it down somewhere...
I remember assuring Tracy it would be no problem... but I couldn’t
for the life of me find where I had put that information!! I was stressing
out over this can page my co-worker, Lisa. Hoping I wasn’t interrupting
her day off. While I was at it, I paged MY pager again... just in case.
I few moments later the phone rang... it was Lisa. I started to tell
her about the voice mail message and suddenly realized... the message
light was no longer on! Then Lisa told me it was SHE who had left the
message... we had a good laugh (and I made sure I got those numbers
from her!). She, by the way, was the one who had accessed and erased
the voice message from home!
While I was talking to
Lisa, the phone rang and I had to hang up. It was a guy named “Dave”
who’s wife had found my pager! He brought it by to me about 4:30
that evening. Thank you, Dave, where ever you are!
Oh... whatever stung me last night was worse than I thought. I have
an itchy spot on my foot that is getting all blistered up and red. Two
spots; one on the bottom of my left instep, and one on the side of my
foot about an inch and a half above the other one.
Oh, yes. Today is the
cxiujara “Rostfesto” de la Esperanto Ligo de Sankta Luiso.
A barbecue held by the Esperanto League of St. Louis. I was planning
on attending, but had to work today.
MONDAY
- SEPTEMBER 25, 2000
My bug bite... I think
it may be a spider bite is worse. My foot is in intense pain and is
red and slightly swollen. My foot aches and the pain goes a third of
the way up my let toward my knee. I can barely walk on it... and I don’t
feel very good.
Jack came home from his
trip tonight. No word on Adam.
TUESDAY
- SEPTEMBER 26, 2000
I slept badly last night.
My ‘spider bite’ has made me sick. Around 2am I was up with
a fever a shakes. Finally, around 4am I felt my system begin to turn
things around. I feel much better this morning... if tired. The spots
on my foot look better. My foot is no longer red all over and the soreness
has retreated to the two spots. They are no longer puffy and tender;
now they are dry and tender. Of course... wearing my shoes all day may
prove to exacerbate the problem.
I finally got some shopping
done tonight... and my laundry.... oh yeah, and dishes. I don’t
understand some people. We have about 6 apartments sharing one dryer
& one washer. Someone keeps leaving their laundry unattended. When
I came home, I glanced in the laundry and noticed (yet again) that there
was a pile of someone’s laundry on top of the dryer. Two or more
hours later I go down to do my laundry and the laundry is STILL piled
there. How inconsiderate! Once, someone left their stuff down there
for about 5 days. It’s not only inconsiderate, it stupid!
Oh... I paid my $5 for
the annual staff picnic. This will be my first official extracurricular
“function” with my new “family” at Wash U.
FRIDAY
- SEPTEMBER 29, 2000
Today is the annual staff
picnic. It’s also payday. And I *might* have a date tonight. Its
not certain.
Well... we never made it to the picnic! We couldn’t find it!
Oh... and the date thing
fell through....
SATURDAY
- SEPTEMBER 30, 2000
Jack and I went out for
breakfast this morning. It was very nice. I order the “Curried
Chicken” with fruit and a glass of milk. It was really delicious.
Then we went to the Leftbank Bookstore where I bought a 2001 Calendar.
We stopped by the health food store and Jack bought a few things, including
a cold carrot juice drink. Yuck... never liked carrot juice. However,
I am always willing to try things and ask to take a sip of his drink.
IT WAS GREAT! It was so cold and tasty. I never had carrot juice that
I actually LIKED before!
My date is back on... this time it is definite. We are going out for
dinner. I don’t know if I’ve ever been on a blind date before....
I don’t think so!
I met “Spirit Wind”
(or “Dale”) this evening and we went out together for the
evening. First we went to Kurt’s (the place where Jack is working now).
I ordered the Sea Bass.... a $23 plate! I am usually more of a hamburger
type guy....
Then we went across the
street... back to the same book store that I had gone to with Jack that
morning. After browsing around in there for a while, we went out to
“Mag’s” (Magnolias), a local bar complex. It was fairly
dead at first, but picked up slowly. Which gave Dale and I time to wander
around and check the place out. Its really quite big (two stories).
Before going home, we
went down the street to “J.J.’s”. This place was JAM
packed! I didn’t even get a drink... the lines were too long.
We didn’t stay very long. Then Dale dropped me off at home. I
think we both had a good time and will have to go out again. It’s
nice to have someone to go out “with” !
